Runner-up, JESSE FREEMAN @jesselfreeman selected by ILYSM:⁣ ⁣ “I am nothing in particular working in various mediums. The first is photography, I mostly do film in black and white. I self develop and darkroom print images of everyday life. The second is filmmaking, I have written and directed 12 short films holding my own screenings. My films usually arise out of my own problems or curiosities playing more to aesthetic theories of films. The third is ikebana, I have been studying under the Sogetsu school for 10 years. I appreciate the structuring you learn in the balance of ‘shin, soe, hikae, and jushi’ and subsequent space in between. The fourth is collage that I started creating a half decade ago using materials I find in recycling bins as a much more direct form of expression. Team ILYSM’s runner-up, XIAO WANG @xiaowang_artist “My work reimagines the tradition of romanticism that established the power dynamic between landscape and ego. Within this dynamic, imageries of nature have served as emotional, spiritual, and political utilities and expressions. In my paintings, the idea of the ego in the landscape is removed from the center of the expression. I paint vegetation with a sublime and supernatural quality by distorting its form and color, depicting plants as uncanny and threatening beings. I love the composition.”⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣ “It was summer some years ago when, across my studio window, I caught a glance of the brown arms of an elderly woman hanging clothes and sheets over her windowsill. I took out my phone and recorded the different fabrics being carried by the wind. It brought to mind images of Abuela in Dominican Republic hanging out sheets to dry in the backyard. I could remember her saying “tiende la ropa que va a llover!” (“hang the clothes before it rains!”), and we would rush to hang clothes on furniture and household objects. Seeing it now in New York City, this mental image seemed to collapse the historical time and geographical distance travelled from the so called third world to the first world. Distorting memory with guest judge @ryanmcginleystudios‘ #ilysm4artists runner-up, DRAKE CARR. “These snapshot moments, scored by a soundtrack of heavy muffled bass trap techno pop, have over the years provided referential images for my artwork. These scenes, along with romantic encounters and other private thoughts, come to the surface when I am drawing and painting. I feel that the reel of memories is projected onto the surfaces of my everyday. Memory is rather unreliable, as it changes with time, so I imagine these scenes being projected not onto a plain smooth wall, but rather a bumpy, warped, intricate surface. [...] In my sculptural practice, I find myself creating human-like objects (a painted towel, a human chair, a clothes hanger with a face, and so on) as a means of personifying their functions and giving them a companion-like quality. Honoring intergenerational narratives throughout history with @ryanmcginleystudio’s #ilysm4artists runner-up, JAZMINE HAYES. “As an interdisciplinary artist, my work engages conversation of erased histories with the African diaspora and the ways in which they are preserved and reproduced. I explore how these histories survive through social codes, language, fashion, music, dance, art, and the narrative. Through themes of spirituality, sisterhood, motherhood, bonding rituals and transformation, I conceptualize safe spaces. Unearthing marginalized groups’ narratives through sculpture with this week’s #ILYSM4Artists runner-up, SATPREET KAHLON, selected by @browngirlcurator. “My work attempts to physicalize the labor of unseen bodies, the silence of unarchived histories, and the stories lost to colonization and erasure. Give it up for #ilysm4artists - two time runner-up, CATALINA SCHLIEBENER, this time, selected by @browngirlcurator. (PS as a reminder, YES you can reapply!!) Catalina is showcasing additional pieces from her Satanic Panic collection. “This series makes reference to the moral panic and collective hysteria that originated in the United States in the 1980s, spreading through many parts of the world in the late 1990s. What particularly interests me about this cultural phenomenon is that in many cases those accused of committing crimes were queer individuals working as caretakers for children, while at the same time this collective hysteria was a camp expression of the culture in which we lived in those years. The Panic drew on cold war mythologies, misogynist ideas surrounding care work, racist tropes about outsiders, and conservative responses to the AIDS crisis. I am particularly interested in how some of these paranoias are replicating again today. As a queer, brown, South American immigrant living in the US and working in the field of early childhood education, I am particularly interested in this cultural phenomenon and its connections to the present. Dip into a digital pool 🏊‍♀️ of memories 🦢 🕯 with #ilysm4artists runner-up, AJA DEWOLF MOURA. ““Saudade means "a feeling of longing" in Portuguese. My father's family is from the Azores, and growing up listening to Fado, I heard the word offered over plastic RCA speakers often. The video itself is a meditation on the digitization and regression of memories. After experiencing personal loss at the beginning of the project, I started to reflect a lot on the digitization of my own life; iPhone photos that can't quite capture the real emotional force of reality, phone calls that go misunderstood, a song that sounded better when I was not recording, and most strangely, the version of myself that others perceive. For me, this creative force foreshadowed the essence of the current health crisis. During this time of complete digitization, I urge all who are in quarantine to practice memory exercises. Think of a moment that was not digitally recorded, and dive into that. Spotlight on #ilysm4artists runner-up, RYAN SCAILS 🔦 “I'm humbled to have been chosen as a finalist for the ILYSM grant program. I personally thrive when I have dialogue with my contemporaries and the art community at large, so at a time when people are losing work and having programs cancelled or postponed it was an affirming respite to have a conversation with the ILYSM team. My practice involves making work about the delicate and often contradictory relationship humans have with the industrialized world. I consider my own body as an example of material conflict; therefore the presence of physical labor in much of my work is developed by systematically fortifying structures to resist elemental changes.
